Baskerne var berømte skibbyggere og søfarere. Nogle teorier antyder endda, at de lærte dette fra vikingerne, der bosatte sig ved Abour-floden i den nordlige del af Baskerlandet. Det er kendt, at baskerne sejlede til Færøerne og opdagede den atlantiske torsk, som er meget let at salte, da den er fejlfri og har et vidunderligt hvidt kød.
