Die Basken waren berühmte Schiffbauer und Seefahrer. Einige Theorien legen sogar nahe, dass sie dies von den Wikingern gelernt haben, die am Abour-Fluss im Norden des Baskenlandes siedelten. Es ist bekannt, dass die Basken zu den Färöer-Inseln segelten und den Atlantischen Kabeljau entdeckten, der sich sehr leicht salzen lässt, da er fehlerfrei ist und ein wunderbares weißes Fleisch hat. Sie handelten damit im gesamten Mittelmeer.
