The Basques were famous shipbuilders and sailors. Some theory even suggests they learned this from the vikings who had satteld along the Abour river in the north of Basque Country. It is known that the Basques sailed to the Faroe islands and discovered Altantic cod which is very easy to salt, because is faltless, and has marvelous white meat. They were trading this in the whole of the Mediterranean.
