Im Jahr 1934, fast ein Jahrhundert nachdem das erste Westmalle aus dem Braukessel floss, wurde eine neue Brauerei im Kloster gebaut. Die Patres verkauften ihr Bier nun auch außerhalb des Klosters und so trat der köstliche Westmalse Trappist in die Außenwelt ein. Im Jahr 2001 gab es eine neue Abfüllanlage, aber das Westmalle Dubbel und Westmalle Tripel werden immer noch nach derselben Zusammensetzung und mit denselben Rohstoffen wie früher gebraut. Biere mit dem Etikett 'Trappist' dürfen nur in den Abteien des Norbertinerordens gebraut werden. Die belgischen Brauereien, die Biere mit dem Etikett 'Authentic Trappist' brauen und verkaufen dürfen, sind Achel, Westmalle, Westvleteren, Orval, Chimay und Rochefort. An anderen Orten der Welt gibt es keine Trappistenbrauereien.
