In 1934, just under a century after the first Westmalle flowed out of the brewing kettle, a new brewery was built in the monastery. The monks now also sold their beer outside the monastery and so the delicious Westmal Trappist made its appearance in the outside world. In 2001 a new bottling plant was added, but the Westmalle Dubbel and Westmalle Tripel are still brewed according to the same composition and with the same raw materials as before. Beers labelled 'Trappist' may only be brewed in the abbeys of the Premonstratensian order. The Belgian breweries that are allowed to brew and sell beers with the 'Authentic Trappist' label are Achel, Westmalle, Westvleteren, Orval, Chimay and Rochefort. Elsewhere in the world there are no Trappist breweries.
