Als 17-jähriger Teenager dachte Felix Wankel (1902-1988) bereits, dass es deutlich effizienter wäre, einen Viertaktmotor seine vier Phasen drehend anstelle von auf- und abgehend durchlaufen zu lassen. Im Alter von 22 Jahren gründete er in Heidelberg eine eigene Werkstatt, in der er seine Idee entwickeln konnte, obwohl er kein Motorenbauer war. Später würde er den Wankelmotor entwickeln.
