Reichhaltige Sand- und Kiesvorkommen wurden von der Firma Gelsenrot ab 1990 auf dem sogenannten Esch entlang der Rheder Straße ausgebaggert. Es entstand ein rund 16 ha großer Abgrabungssee, der heute als Klostersee bezeichnet wird. Am See wurde eine Landhaussiedlung errichtet, die Renaturierung der Uferbereiche wurde 2004 abgeschlossen.
