Im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts suchte die Tilburgser Textilindustrie, die mittlerweile mit Hilfe von Dampf mechanisiert worden war, Möglichkeiten zur Kohlenanlieferung und zum Abtransport der Produkte. Die damaligen Straßen waren schlecht geeignet für die An- und Abfuhr von Kohlen und Textilien. Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden die Pläne für den Bau eines Kanals schließlich konkret. 1910 begann man mit dem Graben, und 1916 legte das erste Schiff in Tilburg an. Es dauerte jedoch bis 1923, bis das 68 km lange Wilhelminakanaal abgeschlossen war.
