I løbet af det 19. århundrede søgte den Tilburgske tekstilindustri, nu mekaniseret med hjælp fra damp, muligheder for kullevering og aftransport af produkterne. De daværende veje egnet sig dårligt til henholdsvis levering og aftransport af kul og tekstil. I begyndelsen af det 20. århundrede blev planerne for anlæggelsen af en kanal endelig konkrete. I 1910 blev der påbegyndt udgravning, og i 1916 ankom det første skib til Tilburg. Det varede dog til 1923, før det 68 km lange Wilhelminakanaal blev færdiggjort.
