Au cours du 19e siècle, l'industrie textile de Tilburg, désormais mécanisée grâce à la vapeur, cherchait des possibilités pour l'approvisionnement en charbon et l'évacuation des produits. Les routes de l'époque étaient mal adaptées pour le transport respectif du charbon et des textiles. Au début du 20e siècle, les plans pour la construction d'un canal sont finalement devenus concrets. En 1910, le creusement a commencé et en 1916, le premier navire a accosté à Tilburg. Cependant, il a fallu attendre 1923 pour que le canal Wilhelmina, long de 68 km, soit achevé.
