A lo largo del siglo XIX, la industria textil de Tilburg, ya mecanizada con la ayuda del vapor, buscó posibilidades para el suministro de carbón y la exportación de productos. Las carreteras de la época eran poco adecuadas para el transporte de carbón y textil, respectivamente. A principios del siglo XX, los planes para la construcción de un canal finalmente se hicieron concretos. En 1910 se comenzó la excavación y en 1916 llegó el primer barco a Tilburg. Sin embargo, no fue hasta 1923 que se completó el canal Wilhelmina de 68 km de longitud.
