Nel corso del XIX secolo, l'industria tessile di Tilburg, ormai meccanizzata grazie al vapore, cercava possibilità per l'approvvigionamento di carbone e il trasporto dei prodotti. Le strade dell'epoca erano poco adatte per il trasporto rispettivamente di carbone e tessuti. All'inizio del XX secolo, i piani per la costruzione di un canale divennero finalmente concreti. Nel 1910 iniziarono i lavori di scavo e nel 1916 attraccò la prima nave a Tilburg. Tuttavia, ci vollero fino al 1923 perché il canale Wilhelmina lungo 68 km fosse completato.
