Es ist ein alter Altarms des Rheins, der parallel zum Rhein, aber westlich davon, traditionell das überschüssige Rheinwasser abführte. Zwischen 1993 und 1995 gab es hohe Wasserstände, und dieser Altarms verursachte Überschwemmungen. 1995 wurde dieser Arm mit Deichen abgeschnitten. Dadurch wurde jedoch das Hauptbett des Rheins bei Hochwasser erneut überlastet.
