It is an old arm of the Meuse that, parallel to the Meuse but to the west, traditionally carried away the excess Meuse water. Between 1993 and 1995, there were high water levels, and this arm of the Meuse caused flooding. In 1995, this arm was closed off with embankments. However, this resulted in the main bed of the Meuse becoming overloaded again during high water.
