Am 7. Mai 1999 wurde in dem niederländischen Ohé und Laak der erste niederländische Fahrradknotenpunkt enthüllt, inspiriert durch das belgische Beispiel. Bereits im Juli 1995 wurde das allererste Fahrradknotenpunktnetzwerk in Belgien eröffnet. Die Eröffnung fand im Nordosten von Belgisch Limburg statt, initiiert von dem Regionalen Landschaft Kempen und Maasland und entworfen von Hugo Bollen.
