Op 7 mei 1999, werd in het Nederlandse Ohé en Laak het eerste Nederlandse fietsknooppunt onthuld, geïnspireerd door het Belgische voorbeeld. Reeds in juli 1995 ging het allereerste fietsknooppuntennetwerk open in België. De opening vond plaats in het noordoosten van Belgisch Limburg, geïnitieerd door het Regionaal Landschap Kempen en Maasland en ontworpen door Hugo Bollen.
