It was here in the Kärntnertortheater that Beethoven presented his ninth symphony to the public for the first time on Friday, May 7, 1842. It was an unexpected but great success. Beethoven insisted that he was also on stage, next to the conductor to indicate the pace. And that was not so evident for the orchestra because who did they watch to follow the pace. In addition, they only had 4 days of practice to perform this master piece.
