As the name suggests, the Koornmarkt used to be the grain market. This was one of the most important markets in the city.
Grain arrived at the harbor at the Graslei and was brought to the market via the narrow alleys. Many of the houses here had a grain loft. Unsold grain could be stored by the farmers in the aardhuizen or strekelhuizen. In the 15th century, there were still about 30 of these storage houses on the Koornmarkt. By the mid-18th century, there were only four left: the Cleppe, den Zak, den Leeuw, and 't Scaec or Damberd.
At the Damberd, you can now enjoy a good pint in what is now one of the more famous jazz cafés in the city.
