The Schulensmeer was created in the 1970s. At that time, a sand extraction site was sought for the construction of the E314 motorway between Lummen and Aarschot. At that time, a holding basin was also planned in the Schulensbroek for better control of the Demer. By extracting the sand at the place where the holding basin was provided, only one place required the sacrifice of agricultural land. The Schulensmeer is named after the church village of Schulen, which is located on the road between Hasselt and Diest.
