When in 1963 the six Voer villages were transferred from the province of Liège to Limburg, more than 90% of the Voer residents spoke the local dialect that perfectly matched the Limburgish of the Overmaas region. Before 1963, there were exclusively Dutch-language church services, and that was also the general language of education, with one exception in Remersdaal. The actual language struggle only began after 1963, after Voeren was annexed to Limburg. French-speaking schools only emerged after 1963. Additionally, there were economic factors that contributed to a partialFrancization: many Flemish Voer residents worked in Liège, where they were in demand for their bilingualism, and farmers mainly sold their livestock to Walloon cattle dealers. Meanwhile, the Francization of Voeren seems to have more or less stopped.
