Why the hell choose an abbey in this Differently Viewed ride?
Well, it must be said: "the paterkes" knew "their" craft. Making cheese, brewing beer, baking bread and yes, also printing books. Anyone who has ever seen the film De Witte or the TV series Wij, Heren van Zichem may remember that de Witte had a job in the printing house. And those who are a bit older may still know the series of school books from primary school: Zonnekind and Zonnestraal, or Zonneland en Doremi.
What was initially intended for personal use or missionary work, later grew into pieces of economy. The "paterkes" no longer do it themselves.
The printing house that was located in the abbey closed its doors in 2004, but the publishing house still exists. The Averbode cheese is now made by Belgomilk and Milcobel. The abbey bread Averbode is baked by La Lorraine Bakery Group, and the abbey beer Averbode is now brewed by brewery Huyghe in Melle. The "paterkes" have meanwhile trained themselves in the craft of "commerce".
In 2016, after the restoration within the abbey walls, an experience centre was established, an abbey shop, a brasserie, a bakery, a cheese ripening plant and a microbrewery were established. The eye and appearances also want what?
Tip
Parking in the area to lick an ice cream in "de lekjesdreef" is often problematic, so for those who do not have time we continue our ride.
