The Rue des Bouchers, sung about by Johan Verminnen, had become a tourist trap in recent years, where it was better not to go, especially not to eat. The City of Brussels took strict action in 2018. It was already prohibited to lure people in with attractive meal deals. Now, the terraces and characteristic awnings also had to be removed to ensure fire safety. A fire truck must be able to pass through the street, the city services explained. As a result: two-thirds of the restaurants closed down. Bit by bit, life is returning to the street, with an eye on the diversity of shops.
