In the famous song by Johan Verminnen, the 'Rue des Bouchers' is a lively street where artists and students meet over a good drink. In recent decades, the street has mainly been known as a tourist trap where you’d better not go for a nice meal. The City of Brussels took strict measures in 2016: terraces and awnings disappeared (to ensure the passage of fire trucks) and operators were no longer allowed to approach passersby. Restaurant owners predicted the demise of the neighborhood. The reconstruction of the street (2018) and the COVID lockdown (2020) also caused difficulties for some businesses. Nowadays, everything seems to be 'business as usual', although there is still quite a bit of vacancy.
Follow the Beenhouwersstraat and take the first street on the left, the Korte Beenhouwersstraat. Cross the Grasmarkt and continue straight along the Vlees-en-Broodstraat to the Grote Markt.
