Here in the center of Nokere, in 1634, Clara De Vos, or the Witch of Nokere, was first strangled and then burned at the stake for witchcraft. She was accused of enchanting cows. She was also said to have frightened a three-year-old child to death. It was claimed that she had given the child an apple with devil's powder. Clearly, the inspiration for this was drawn from the fairy tale of Snow White.
