During World War I, the entire area west of the Yser and east of the national road Diksmuide - De Panne was flooded. By opening the locks of the Yser, this area was completely submerged with seawater at high tide. In the IJzertoren, you can view a map that shows how extensive this flooded area was. The territory of the municipality of Stuivekenskerk was thus almost completely flooded. This flooding caused a turning point in World War I.
