The Steengelaag is an area of 31 ha and consists of clay pits, young alder forest, an older poplar plantation with a lot of dead wood, a large pond and a flowery hayfield. From 1885 to 1975, the clay pits of the former brickyard of the De Hemptinne family provided work for part of the Population of Steken. The clay stitching was still done with the spade, in what is now called the oldest clay pit. In 1913, this task was automated by the commissioning of the clay dredger (called excavateur or scrapper in the local dialect).
