It started in a small bakery
On August 8, 1885, Jules Destrooper wrote connoisseur history. Only he didn't know that at the time. Jules opened a small, cozy bakery that day in West Flanders, Lo.
Julius Renatus Maria Destrooper was a busy bee. He combined his bakery with a shop selling colonial goods from Africa and Asia. A smart move, as this set him apart from the five other bakers in the village. Customers came specifically to Lo for his coffee, tobacco, chocolate, and spices.
The first cookie was an instant hit
With the spices from his store, Jules got to work in his bakery. He incorporated them into paper-thin Almond cookies. He gave them as gifts to his customers.
Before long, more people came to Lo for his Fine almond cookies than for the exotic goods. Jules noticed this as well, and that’s why he decided to focus on this full time.
The rest is history. So much history that we’ve put it on a timeline for you. Grab a cookie and swipe away!
