Bekkerzeel is a part of the Flemish Brabant municipality of Asse in the Pajottenland. Bekkerzeel was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977. During the Carolingian period, Bekkerzeel was located in the Brabant region and later, until the end of the 18th century, in the Brussels quarter of the Duchy of Brabant, within the Holy Roman Empire. At the rectory of Bekkerzeel in 1789, the command of the troops of the United Netherlands States was handed over to General Jan Andries vander Mersch.
