The famous textile city has its origins in the geology of the region. In the valley of the Vesdre, some industrial activity soon developed. In addition to metalworking, the cloth industry became particularly important. He benefited from the low-calcareous water that came from the High Fens and was very suitable for washing the wool. In a document of 1413 there was mention of four volesses. In the 17th century, the cloth industry almost completely replaced that of metalworking.
