The St. Anthony celebration takes place annually on the third Sunday of January. The folk festival is now recognized as intangible heritage. It is celebrated in many places in Flanders. However, in Ingooigem, the tradition of the St. Anthony celebration is still very strong.
Traditionally, farmers would go to church on January 17, the feast day of St. Anthony of Egypt, to honor the saint and beseech his favors to protect their pigs from the plague and the so-called 'coud vier' (cold fire). The latter was often a deadly inflammation of the pigs' legs. In connection with the celebration, farmers would bring a pig's head. Winter was indeed the season for slaughtering pigs when modern refrigeration was not yet available.
