Albert Einstein lived in Villa Savoyarde for a few months in 1933. After a stay as a visiting professor in the United States, he arrived in the port of Antwerp on his return trip to Germany in March 1933. Because Adolf Hitler was elected in Germany that same month, the Einstein couple decided not to return and went to De Haan, where they went to live in the left part of the double villa 'Savoyarde' in the Shakespearelaan. Later his stepdaughter Margot, his assistant Walther Mayer and his secretary Helen Dukas came to live with them. Eventually it became too dangerous for Einstein in Belgium too and on September 9, 1933 he left incognito De Haan, to England where he stayed for a while. On October 17, 1933, he left for good to the United States.
