BERNADETTE VAN DAMME - CITY GUIDE OUDENAARDE: "Brewery Roman was founded in 1545 and is the oldest family brewery in the country, good for fourteen generations. As a city guide in Oudenaarde, I also assist in the tours. After four years, I am well acquainted with the brewery, thanks to the wise lessons of master brewer Jef Snauwaert. Together with my husband, I have also delved into the wonderful world of beer. In Munte, where I live, we organized an exhibition on Heavenly Beers two years ago. We visited a number of breweries then. I learned a lot from that. And if I ever get a question that I cannot answer, the staff at the brewery gladly comes to help. The most beautiful object, in my opinion, is the cart with barrels, which was once used to transport beer through the city. The carts were linked together and wobbled along the cobblestones. The guild house of the brewers in Ghent is named De Lintworm: a playful reference to the beer carts of old."
