As the name suggests, there used to be a ferry here that crossed the Lys. Around 1825 the ferry gave way to a wooden bridge, which was replaced in 1900 by a bridge in bluestone and iron. The current concrete arch bridge (1927) is a protected monument together with the Old Abbey, whose history dates back to the 7th century. Near the Pont bridge is the Oude Leieput, the northernmost end of the Oude Leie.
