The Europalia International Cultural Festival was first organised in Belgium in 1969 with the aim of creating a deeper knowledge of the cultural backgrounds of the different countries within the European Union.
The festival takes place every two years.
Each host country presents a series of exhibitions on past, contemporary and modern art over a period of 3 months.
This monument, which was erected as part of Europalia Portugal, symbolizes the meeting of the southern marble and the northern hemisphere and also symbolizes the openness of Europe. It was proposed in 1991 by the 12 (then only 12 member states) pillars that surround the main monument.
The shapes evoke menhirs and dolmens, ancient remnants of a European civilization.
It was inaugurated by the wife of the Portuguese President Soares.
