In the Prussian period, Eupen was not connected to the railway network until 1864 via the branch from Herbestahl. This connects it to the important international hub to both Belgium (Verviers, Liège, Brussels, Antwerp, ...) and Germany (Aachen, Cologne, ...). That is about 20 years after the line from Verviers connects with Welkeraedt and Herbesthal. Originally, the intention of the Prussian government was to make Eupen an important station, connected to Aachen and Cologne. After all, Eupen was an industrial textile city and would gain competitiveness with the nearby Verviers wool centre through an international connection, but the hilly landscape was then too great a technical and financial challenge. The additional route Eupen - Raeren was opened on 3 August 1887. During the construction of the Vesder dam, line 49A was expanded in 1936 to provide freight transport to and from the dam. In the 60s the railway was closed and broken up.
Passenger traffic was discontinued on 29 March 1959, but then reintroduced on 3 June 1984. Eupen station is today the terminus on line 49 (Welkenraedt - Raeren) of the IC-01 connection between Ostend and Eupen and is located. Furthermore, there are no passenger trains outside some P-trains. The rest of the line is only used for trains to the workshop of Rails et Traction in Raeren or when running a locomotive. The station is a convenient gateway to the nature reserves that are located in the area. You can change to different bus lines,
