In 1912 Odiel Defraeye claimed victory in the Tour de France. He used his prize money to build a 'Café des sports' and a cycling track in Rumbeke. International stars like Rik Van Steenbergen and Jef 'Poeske' Scherens came to cycle there. The nickname 'Poeske' (which translates as 'kitty') comes from his ‘cat's leap’, his typical final surge.
