A long brewing tradition creates the link between past and present. As early as the 14th century, when the first brewer’s guilds in Brabant began to flourish, Henricus De Block obtained the brewing rights on behalf of his inheritance from the Duke of Brabant and Burgundy. However, it is Louis De Block who will give the impetus for the current brewery. He was a miller and farmer married to a brewer’s daughter from the rural Baardegem. Generations upon generations passed down the brewing traditions. Paul Saerens, who married a daughter of De Block, did not put his name on the brewery. As a young man, he saw how the world became one and borders disappeared. He looks beyond the walls of Merchtem. Today, 80% of "Block beer" is exported abroad. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America, he even launched a "Columbus beer". The brewery also produces the triple Abbey beer Dendermonde and Special 6, a blend of young and old beers. In two reception areas of the brewery, Paul Saerens has set up a brewery museum. Visitors are given an overview of the industrial archaeology of brewing activities.
