Two hundred years before the fields of the Westhoek were strewn with corpses, these fields were the stage for the 'Battle of Oudenaarde', a tragic resolution of a succession issue. Eight years after the Spanish king died without an heir, his empire was threatened to fall into the hands of the grandson of the French king Louis XIV. 80,000 Allied soldiers gathered here to dissuade 95,000 Frenchmen. In the battle, 6,000 were killed and 7,000 were wounded. To commemorate them, this solitary officers' chapel was built at the northernmost edge of the battlefield.
