The castle was built from 1891 in Mosan neo-Renaissance style. It was originally a dream of the rentier Edgar Maris, who had bought the Bokrijk estate from the Coghen family in 1889. Jacobus Van Mansfeld was recruited as an architect. However, Maris ran into financial difficulties and tried to supplement his resources by cutting down many trees on his property and starting a wood wool factory. The Bokrijk station was also important for this: wood could be loaded there. Iron ore, in the form of iron ore, was also mined on the estate.
