The moated castle Borgitter was built at the beginning of the 16th century by Jan van Waes, drossaard of the county of Horn. Nothing of the original castle has been preserved, only the corner tower is a reminder of an older construction phase (1610). The current classicist building in Mosan style dates from the end of the 18th century and is founded on oak piles.
In the courtyard behind the castle are the 18th century farms Breukskenshof and Halfeshof, the steward's house and a 17th century water mill. Until the French Revolution, the castle was inhabited by descendants of the Van Waes family. In 1800 it came into the possession of the Michiels van Kessenich family. The castle and its outbuildings have been protected since 13 January 1981.
Borgitter Castle is located at Kasteelstraat 20 in Kessenich.
