The landscape of the Hoge Kempen, and thus also of the Platte Lindenberg and Vossenberg, has changed significantly in the last hundred years. For centuries, it was covered with heath. The landscape was shaped by the way of life and agriculture. The sheep grazed on the heath during the day. In the evenings, they returned to the farm in the valley. The manure was used there, mixed with a layer of old heath for the small fields. Trimming the heath produced more heather blooms, which benefited the honeybees. Thus, every small farmer was both a beekeeper, crop farmer, and livestock breeder, but all on a very small scale.
