Description

Of the four newt species in Flanders, the great crested newt appeals most to the imagination. Our largest newt is also protected in Europe. In Wellen, the 'water dragon' can still be found in four zones. One of those zones is the De Grote Beemd nature reserve. In recent years, Limburgs Landschap vzw has had a network of ponds constructed in the Grote Beemd. Hopefully they will be able to spread across the Herk Valley again in the future. A small-scale landscape with fish-free pools or ponds, hedges, wooded edges, reed beds and rows of pollard trees form the ideal habitat for this species.
