The 'Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde' with its white-painted facades and tranquil cloister garden was founded in 1245. In this piece of world heritage, beguines once lived, emancipated women who, while being laywomen, still led a devout and celibate life. Today, the Beguinage is inhabited by sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict and single women from Bruges. In the Beguine house, you still get a good sense of what daily life was like in the 17th century.
