On the barn of the Millstone is the year 1857. It was in that year that the first trade union in Belgium, the Fraternal Society of Weavers , was founded in Ghent. And it is also the year that Frenchman Jean-François Millet made his famous Arenleessters (Des glaneuses) and the Algelus. It could have been an image from the surroundings of this barn at the time. At the first exhibition, this realistic depiction of three poor peasant women was widely criticized and considered too revolutionary and a glorification of socialism.
