This fort was built in 1584, in the midst of the Eighty Years' War. The commission came from general Alexander Farnese. At the behest of the Spanish king, he tried to bring the rebellious Netherlands back under control. Fort Sint-Marie was connected to Fort Sint-Filips, on the other side of the Scheldt, by means of a ship's bridge. In this way, Farnese cut off the supply to Antwerp. His plan succeeded: in 1585 Antwerp was forced to surrender.
