Located in the north of the municipality of Zwijndrecht, east of the village center of Kallo, on the left bank of the Scheldt. Originally, a fortress was erected here in 1584 by order of the Duke of Parma; built by the general Marquis of Roubaix. Fort Saint-Marie, together with Fort Saint-Philips on the right bank, was part of the raft bridge over the Scheldt. Fort Saint-Marie remained in place after the demolition of the bridge in 1585. In 1865 a new fort was built in the belt of forts around Antwerp (see Zwijndrecht). Since 1961: base of the Belgian Navy.
