The Kolenhaven is a side dock of the Albert Canal that was constructed for the transport of coal. The Kolenhaven was built simultaneously with three other coal docks at the same time as the Albert Canal. Before the coal docks were established, coal was transported by train to the Walloon steel industry. In Beringen, there were twelve standby steam locomotives for that purpose. From 1937, the coal docks began to operate at full capacity. Although there is no longer a mining industry, these coal docks are still in use, among other things for loading imported coal for power plants.
