The Old Cheese Factory

‘The Old Cheese Factory’ at 's Graventafelstraat in Passendale is housed in a former cheese and butter factory St-Jozef and now serves as a cheese museum. The building was established in 1936 by the couple Romain and Germaine Donck-Spruytte to expand their existing activities - the production of butter and cheese. This cheese factory is the origin of Passendale cheese. When the family later left the building, it was used by another operator and it fell into complete disrepair starting in 1963. It was only in 1995 that the cheese factory was protected as a monument, and after a thorough restoration in 2003, it was put into use as a heritage site. The economic activity of the aforementioned family was first taken over by the Dutch group Campina, then resold to the company Bongrain SA, based in Viroflay (France). The production of Passendale cheese itself has been located in Passendaalse Statiestraat since 1948. The Old Cheese Factory houses, in addition to the museum, a unique brasserie, with authentic cuisine and warm service.
