The Herkenrode Forest is a nature reserve located between the towns of Stevoort and Kermt, in the Belgian municipality of Hasselt.
This forest was owned by the Abbey of Herkenrode and was known by the name Grotenbos. Here, the abbey let its cattle graze. The forest covered approximately 180 hectares, but it was expropriated during the French period. Since then, it has been referred to as Imperial Forests. From 1815 onwards, it became known as Royal Forests. Ultimately, the forest was purchased by Adolf and Ulysse Claes. In 1857, Louis Claes, the brother of Adolf and Ulysse, inherited the forest.
