The imposing municipal hall at Sint-Gillis can almost be compared to the city hall on the Grand Place in Brussels. This is perhaps to be expected of the municipality which was formally known as ‘Obbrussel’ (meaning Upper Brussels), because of its higher position in relation to the walled city.
Rural Sint-Gillis only turned urban in the late 19th century. These days, upper Sint-Gillis tends to attract wealthy Brussels residents and expats. The quality of life is significantly better than in the lower districts. In fact, the Bosnie district in lower Sint-Gillis is one of the most densely populated and poorest districts in the country. It accommodates 38,000 residents per square kilometre, which is five times the regional average.
Cycle back to the centre along some real highlights in lower Sint-Gillis such as Sint- Gillisvoorplein (Parvis de Saint-Gilles) and Moricharplein (Place Morichar).
Paul Dejaerlaan 39, 1060 Sint-Gillis, Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest, Belgium
